![]() ON FEBRUARY 26, SUSAN GRAHAM RETURNS TO CARNEGIE HALL TO SING BERLIOZ'S BELOVED SONG CYCLE LES NUITS D'ÉTÉ WITH THE CHICAGO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA AND MAESTRO PIERRE BOULEZ "THE ALLURING AMERICAN MEZZO-SOPRANO AND BERLIOZ'S MUSIC ARE A MATCH MADE IN VOCAL HEAVEN." Chicago Tribune On February 26, mezzo-soprano Susan Graham returns to Carnegie Hall to sing Berlioz's Les nuits d'été with the Chicago Symphony and Maestro Pierre Boulez. Just weeks ago, the stunning mezzo-soprano joined the New York Philharmonic and Lorin Maazel for Berlioz's rarely-heard cantata La mort de Cléopâtre, to great acclaim. Over the course of the spring, Ms. Graham will continue singing works by Berlioz, including L'Enfance du Christ, with stops in Berlin and Zurich. Ms. Graham and Maestro Boulez gave their first performances of Berlioz's beloved Les nuits d'été earlier this month, in Chicago. "The alluring American mezzo-soprano and Berlioz's music are a match made in vocal heaven, and her performance of that composer's song cycle, Les nuits d'été ("Summer Nights") could only be called exquisite," raved John von Rhein of the Chicago Tribune. "The six songs demand the qualities that Graham has in abundance - a beautiful voice that can be lightened and darkened with ease and is secure throughout a wide range; a natural command of French vocal style, diction, and nuance; and the ability to project an emotional range from rapturous delight to bitter bereavement." During the second half of her almost entirely French season, Ms. Graham continues her Berlioz tour of the world's great orchestras, singing and recording La mort de Cléopâtre with Simon Rattle and the Berlin Philharmonic, and performing L'Enfance du Christ with Charles Dutoit and Zurich's Tonhalle-Orchester. She returns to the Met in the spring in a signature Mozart role: Sesto in La clemenza di Tito. Details of further engagements in Ms. Graham's calendar can be found here. |
